I'm currently working as a landscaper and I really hate it. I hold a B.A. in philosophy so writing and analysis comes naturally to me and I'm trying to get a serious writing career started. I thought that joining this site might be a good way to get some exposure and hopefully help my portfolio out. I have a large hand-full of articles posted at www.boardriderlounge.com, a new site that is still in beta-launch mode. Please drop by there and check out the site if you're into skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, and wakeboarding.
"your disgustingly well-behaved children..." HA! Yesterday I had the extreme pleasure of telling rich kids what to do, per my orders delegated down from a dude above me, and what did they do? SHIRK THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES! It is not hard to comprehend "cover that pipe with cobble stone after you finish digging up the rest of the covered cobble from over here," but they did, and it made me look like a dick because the rich kids (who sped off in a BMW hatch-back driven by the eldest who is 17) have the same problem as their spawners (I reject the use of the word 'parents' because clearly they have hired a nanny to dispence the belt on these kids); they are disconnected from the "real world" of us poor people.
This is going on in Telluride, CO, as well, but there are two very easy targets to pick on here; Oprah and Tom Cruise. Despite "Top Gun" and "Days of Thunder" I really hate Tom Cruise for having a mansion in Telluride that he doesn't live in full-time. Oprah is just as guilty, if not more so because she claims home base in Chicago.
I also know about tourist season in Durango, CO, because I went to college there and it's easy to pick out the gapers once mid-June rolls around. The town feeds off it and supports its economy off of it, outside of giving the locals DUI's. The same happens in the winters for "jeans ski season" and spring break, which spans about a month due to varying Texas school districts rotating schedules. It is the consequence of living in a second-home town.
Pretty pathetic. Why aren't celebs crucified? Oh wait, it's because they have the money to hire the lawyers that the rest of us can't afford should we need them.
To me what is truly baffling is that I actually know who the hell Adam Lambert is and I don't have a TV feed in my house!
"“American Idol” and “Britain’;s Got Talent” along with other such shows has produced a few very talented artists but more than that the shows have provided hundreds of hours of entertainment and a respite from the otherwise insulting items that pass for programming on the television airwaves."
FALSE! There are FAR better shows that constantly get overlooked; "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "My Name is Earl (now canceled)," and "The Boondocks," just to name three honestly funny, socially-satirical shows WORTH watching, not just some pop garbage controlled by teenage girls' text messaging. How do I know about these shows without internet access? I buy them on DVD because I am exposed to TV every once in a while and I'd like my money going to the creative teams behind these shows. Not to mention TV on DVD is a lot better because there isn't commercials and it's typically uncensored. "Family Guy" and "Futurama" came back from the grave through DVD sales, hopefully Idol doesn't when that horrible intelligence vacuum finally dies.
I'm not so sure about this one. There are two issues here; Brandon Marshall is (for now) the Broncos' only Pro Bowl WR so I do think he has a little leverage here (not as much as he thinks though), and McDaniels just might be a total douche bag that no surviving Bronco from last season wants to play for. It's ugly no matter what. The Broncos aren't going to have a good season this year, and that could continue with another coaching shake-up and player relocation's. Rebuilding is the hardest on the fans, myself included.
It is clear that the Mexican government is incompetent, and after watching an episode of 60 minutes about 6 weeks ago on the drug war going on down there, corrupt with drug money. It's semi-organized anarchy. Situations like these lead to full revolt, but with the Zeta's gaining more influence (drug-wise and "politically") I wonder how many Mexicans have the will to fight them?
I don't see this one going anywhere. Dude said it best in the linked article "people search based on ease of use and habit," Microsoft is still on its heels after Office '08 and Vista and is trying to come up with other ways to generate revenue while the rest of the world goes out and gets a Mac (like my mom, many friends, and I did).
Ah, but the view from atop places like that is worth it. My guess is that the storm came up quick and caught him off guard. It happens here all the time.
The riots in L.A. were to be expected. It seems that every time a sports team wins a title there is a riot. Here in Denver we had an Avs riot, two consecutive Broncos riots, and then another Avs riot when the teams won titles. We haven't had another riot since because none of the teams here can win another title but that's not the point. This is by no means an American phenomenon either; soccer riots in Europe seemed pretty common about ten years ago (I don't know how common they are anymore).
As for Iran, I'm no political scientist but it reeks of election theft, something us Americans became aware of in 2000 but were too taciturn to do anything meaningful about (myself included).
Tornadoes aren't extremely common in the metro area, but I've had enough tornado warnings thrown my way to know to get the hell away from one if possible, and failing that to get in the basement with some beer fast.
It is quite disgusting. I went to college in Durango, CO, which is allegedly an "old west" type of town, but it is suffering the same plight. I haven't been back since I graduated a year and a half ago, but a friend of mine was just there and she said that historic main street, where Jack Dempsey started his quest for the title belt inside of El Rancho Tavern, is getting developed like crazy. Durango is a small mountain town with a pretty close-knit community, but there is a problem; everybody makes the 2:30 AM run to Del Taco, shops at Wal-Mart, and gets their prescriptions filled at the brand new and totally unnecessary Walgreen's, and everybody claims to hate it despite the abundance of mom and pop type shops at their disposal. Welcome to the American Condition where homogenization is king.

Now we're going to have to ban hammers too!
