If the agreement had been made public there would have been all sorts of public opposition and it might even have brought down the Japanese govt. so it made perfect sense to keep it secret.
Well the good in the Taliban sharing power is that the civil war would probably end and foreign troops would withdraw. Of course the arrangement could always break down but perhaps all sides would be happy to have a few years of peace and stability!
The role of the US as global cop and the consequent expansion of the military industrial complex in the US and elsewhere has in effect been a type of military Keynesianism for the US and has been helping expand the economy and the debt for decades. It also provides employment opportunities for the less well off.
Good to hear that the group was also protesting drone attacks. The use of drones is increasing even though it inevitably involves killing of innocent people euphemestically called collateral damage. Imagine if drones were used to target criminals in the US what an outcry there would be when the first innocent people were inadvertently killed.
This protest is taking place just as Robert Gates has signed an order against the release of photos of torture. A lower court had ordered the release of the photos but it was appealed to the Supreme Court but now with new powers given to him by congress Gates has closed the door. No freedom of information when it comes to the war on terror!
Wow. Fox news reporting favorably on pot legalization. So I wonder what Glenn Beck thinks of that! Haha. If they do legalise pot I expect that it will have a heavy sin tax.
In Honduras the US has said that it will recognise the results of the Honduran presidential elections whether Zelaya is restored or not. The agreement brokered by the US was in effect violated by the Micheletti govt. when the Honduran Congress failed to meet and ratify the agreement before Micheletti without the participation of Zelaya or his restoration went ahead and appointed his own unity govt. Lagos one of the two overseers of the implementation of the agreement agrees the agreement has been violated. By recognising the results of the election and ignoring the violations of the agreement the US has removed any pressure on the Micheletti government to honor the agreement.
OAS envoy says Honduran interim broke acccord by forming a unity gov't without Zelaya's input By: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Organization of American States tasked former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis with verifying the pact.
Lagos told CNN en Espanol Saturday that interim President Roberto Micheletti broke the agreement by unilaterally forming a unity government.
Micheletti announced late Thursday that a power-sharing government had been created even though coup-deposed President Manuel Zelaya had not submitted his list of members. Zelaya declared the pact dead.
I am not sure what Abdullah thinks he is up to. We should remember that many of his votes turned out to be fraudulent as well. Even if the election were fair there is every reason to doubt that he would win and if he did win by some miracle or machinations the Pashtuns would probably revolt. Perhaps he is just trying to get a better offer to join the government. After all he served in a Karzai govt. before. No doubt western officials wish he would just shut up instead of making things worse. The squeaky wheel after all could get thrown in the garbage dump!
The lopsided vote is very disappointing but not unexpected. The power of the Israel lobby in the US is rather astonishing. There is more criticism of Israel in Israeli papaers such as Haaretz than in the US press. The lobby is watchful and active and immediately pounces upon even the mildest critcism of Israel. What is encouraging is that there are Jews such as Goldstone and Uri Avnery who are still able to courageously stand against Israeli denials of their own injustices. The Obama administration has given in on the settlement issue and put Abbas in an unenviable position where he may be tossed out by his own people.
This is quite surprising in some ways in that Obama has done nothing and simply is carrying on with exactly the same position as Bush and so far backed up by US courts. The Arar Inquiry was an anomaly and the Canadian govt. will be sure never to allow anything like it again. There were three other Canadian citizens also jailed and tortured in Syria and there was an inquiry into their cases )The Iacobucci INquiry) but the scope was much narrower. Even so Iacobucci did conclude that some Canadian authorities at the least acted improperly. Of course nothing was done and the inquiry was designed not to give as little scope as possible for further action by the people involved.
Israel has tested the US to see how firm its resolve is. Earlier in the year Obama was adamant that all construction had to stop but in September the tune was changed and now Clinton praises Israel after Israel thumbed its nose at US demands and chides Abbas with making the same demand as the US made earlier! It seems as if the peace process is going nowhere but that is hardly new news.
Yes it is a terrible disaster but part of life in the Philippines. We have a daughter in Manila but she lives in Makati on the fifth floor of an apt. building. Life has gone on as normal with her. Our other relatives are in Legazpi on the east coast which has avoided the main thrust of the typhoons. Manila is very crowded and as a result many people especially poorer people live in areas where they should not because of the danger of just such flooding as this.
The presidential candidate in Uruguay is Jose Mujica. He faces a runoff vote because he polled just under 50 percent. There is an article about him here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/25/jose-mujica-favourite-uruguay-election
Seriously, Chavez hardly gains anything from Zelaya's re-instatement since Zelaya will be a lame duck president with reduced powers and a congress opposed to him. He also will serve only for a couple of months and then the president elected in November will take over. The coup leaders get international recognition for the election that their supporters will probably win and also all sanctions will be withdrawn so the economy can get back to normal.
The only victory for Marxism in Latin America is in Uruguay where the Broad Front representative will probably be elected as president. He was a founder of the Tupamaros and jailed for 17 years! However the policy of the front is pragmatic reformist in nature.
