Australia scored a dramatic victory winning a humdinger of a match over South Africa in the 2nd ODI of the ongoing series at Bellerive Oval. The series is now even at 1-1. The Proteas needed 17 runs off the final over but Ben Hilfenhaus’ bete noire of the last match, Albie Morkel who was batting despite a dislocated finger and Mark Boucher could not complete the task on hand for SA. Hilfenhaus conceded just 11 runs this time around in the crucial final over and Australia won the match by five runs.
Earlier in the match there were some noteworthy contributions from Jean-Paul Duminy (35 off 34 balls), Jacques Kallis (72 off 96 balls) and AB de Villiers (44 off 62 balls). But the SA juggernaut was halted by some brilliant fielding by the Aussies which resulted in the run outs of two key Proteas batters, Duminy and de Villiers.
The winning target of 250 was thanks mainly to the efforts again of Shaun Marsh who scored a classy 78 in the Australian innings, after being put into bat by the Proteas. Ponting contributed a vital 64 runs and was the architect of a 135-run stand for the 2nd wicket in the company of Marsh after debutant Warner who has a reputation for slam-bang cricket had departed without a whimper. Marsh sounded dissatisfied at the end of the match despite the victory when he had this to say.
