By Yoginder Sikand November 21, 2008 Muslim India

Swami Agnivesh is the President of the Sarvadeshik Arya Pratinidhi Sabha ('World Council of the Arya Samaj'). A well-known social activist, he has played a leading role in the struggle against communalism in India , including against Hindutva terrorism, about which he talks in this interview with Yoginder Sikand.

Q: How do you explain the recent wave of bomb blasts that have taken place across India ? How can this dangerous phenomenon be tackled?
A: Clearly, behind such attacks is a certain ideology at work whose major objective is to create hatred between the different communities. That, rather than just killing innocent people, is the real objective of those behind these dastardly and cowardly acts. These forces, who could be both internal as well as external, and who could include extremist Hindus, extremist Muslims or others, clearly do not want people of the different communities to live in peace with each other.

Among the various steps that should be taken to counter this form of terrorism is for people to isolate the forces within their own respective religious communities that seek to foment communal hatred. If a Hindu name emerges as being behind a certain terrorist attack, it is for Hindus, in particular, to fiercely condemn such a person or organization, not just as a criminal but also as anti-Hindu. And the same holds true for how Muslims should respond if the person or outfit behind a terror attack bears a Muslim...

By Praful Bidwai 15 November, 2008 Muslim India

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur’s arrest and the questioning of Hindutva extremists for the Malegaon blasts point to the need for action against majoritarian extremism.

When this column (Frontline, October 6, 2006) raised doubts about the police account of the terrorist bombings, which killed more than 30, in Malegaon in northern Maharashtra, many readers questioned this writer’s motives and the validity of his argument that the attacks were in all probability executed by Hindutva fanatics.

Two years on, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested Sadhvi Pragya Thakur. In Madhya Pradesh, Mahashtra and Gujarat, a number of other Hindutva extremists have been detained for interrogation. They have reportedly found solid evidence of the existence of an elaborate, well-ramified terrorist network, which they suspect was involved in several recent bombings in different States, including the blasts in Malegaon and in Modasa in Gujarat in September.

    A relook at terror

If the police succeed in substantiating their allegations, the government will have to radically revise its view of terrorism, which it sees primarily, if not solely, as the work of extremist organisations such as the Indian Mujahideen, the Students Islamic Movement of India, the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, many of them linked to Pakistan/Bangladesh.

The government will also have to go after or ban Hindutva groups such as the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Sri Ram Sena and, above all, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), which mentors them and to which...

Stars Oprah and Rob Lowe flee multi-million homes as 70mph winds fan raging wildfires

DEVASTATING bush fires were sweeping across California last night, burning up a mile of land every hour.

And, with near-hurricane winds whipping up the flames, thousands of people risk losing their homes, including Back To The Future star Christopher Lloyd.

The 70-year-old, who played Doc in the movie, was away filming in Canada when his home was swept up in the fire.

More than 1,000 firemen are still trying to control the blazes, which have been made worse by 70mph winds. So far an area of at least four square miles has been destroyed in and around the city of Santa Barbara.

One elderly man has died and 13 people have been injured, with state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declaring a state of emergency. More than 5,000 homes in the celebrity enclave of Montecito, where Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges and Oprah Winfrey live, were evacuated on Friday.

West Wing star Lowe, 44, said he fled with his children as flames shot 200ft in the air. He said: “It was like Armageddon. You couldn’t hear yourself think.”

The fire began on Thursday, destroying multi-million-dollar homes and leaving the landscape charred for miles.

At one time flames surrounded Olive View Medical Center, knocking out electricity, forcing hospital staff to evacuate patients.

And there were fears last night that fires could hit the main power lines to LA. “We may have to move to rolling blackouts,” said mayor Antonio Villaraigosa,...
