aquamarina217, pesticides are designed to kill and intended to make huge profits for companies like Dow Chemical. Trifluralin is one of the most widely used herbicides for controlling weed growth in agriculture; over 14 million pounds of this known carcinogen were used in the United States alone in 2001. These evil poisons seep into the ground water, weave through rivers and oceans, and became part of the overall earth's ecosystem--and do not discriminate between killing grasses or insects or polar bears or humans. Shame on companies like Dow and shame on the EPA and other regulatory authorities that allow irresponsible chemical companies to run amok and haphazardly commit crimes against all life on earth.
I am a California Boy whose forefathers emigrated from Chicago, the land of Mike Royko and his colorful stories. Regrettably, I've never been to Chicago nor followed the career of Royko, so thank you CaliforniaMike for bringing your talent and wisdom to Allvoices and reminding me there are so many different characters and communities all over the world with different stories to tell. Look at those making comments here, they are a "Who's Who" of great contributors and my favorite writers, and we've all converged together here at Allvoices. Made my day!
I'm a "ferry commuter" and must admit I've been in and out of the San Francisco Ferry Building for months and never noticed the Crouching Spider, so I sincerely appreciate your giving me a glimpse of the beauty that I regrettably overlooked in my own backyard. Thanks for jogging me into stopping and smelling a few more roses.
Jonalex, great story and keep those great articles coming! I loved the biological sciences but chemistry wasn't my thing. I memorized the periodic table ages ago and wouldn't attempt to regurgitate it now.
jessilyn, Love the T-shirt and welcome to Allvoices! So, yes Allvoices does have an incentive program where they pay cash to writers that post original articles and photos, and yes there's a whole lot more substance here than on Facebook. What do you enjoy writing about?
I was a young boy, but I still remember vividly what I was doing on November 22, 1963 when the radio announced that JFK had been shot in Dallas, Texas. Still saddens me to revisit that day! - msherf
Chris, I appreciate your beautiful artwork as I have appreciated reading your stories! Thank you for sharing and I look forward to enjoying more of your contributions. - msherf
brigidprimrose, thank you for your story and especially for the poem. Good stuff and very befitting! I look forward to reading more of your perspectives. - msherf
carolpadovezi, We truly "are what we eat" and your sensible suggestions will optimize our health. I would add to totally avoid artificial colors and flavors and chemical preservatives, which abound in nearly everything we eat. We all should be smart consumers and avid label readers, and we have the "power of the pocketbook" to demand food producers offer healthier choices. - msherf
mona37, sounds like a reasonable theory, considering the extent humans will go to for political gain. The swine flu "crisis" is also being exploited for financial gain by the pharmaceutical companies and Wall Street. - msherf
journalistmom, I have a daughter who is now 26 and should have been diagnosed as bipolar. Despite the pleas of my wife and I, my daughter's psychiatrist was reluctant to render the proper diagnosis when she was a young teen, so my child continued to "fall through the cracks" and did not get the proper help she needed. Years later, the psychiatrist admitted he was wrong for not diagnosing our daughter as bipolar. Too little, too late from this supposed "professional." - msherf
songbird, I agree that Allison belted out "Cry Baby" much better the second time around. I personally think Kris should have been the one to be booted. Allison is seriously much more talented. - Michael
