instgtr, Wow do I love your articles and wow did I ever used to suck down bags and bags of Werther's Originals myself, until I became a consummate label reader. You had my mouth watering with "real butter, fresh cream, sugar, brown sugar" but you lost me at vanillin, a waste product of paper mills also known as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde.
I've always been curious why Werther's would cut costs/taste corners by not using real vanilla, when all their other ingredients seem to be of quality?
So, I'm gonna munch down a "virtual Werthers" and live vicariously through your enthusiasm and my memories of the delicious taste, but my lips will never touch any food with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives again. Such chemicals have riddled my wife with debilitating autoimmune diseases and reading labels has literally been a life saver.
I remain a huge fan and it was not my intent to appear as a downer, but the whole "chemicals in our food thing" just hits a nerve and I felt compelled to comment.
CaliforniaMike, This and the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall all in the same week? I can't wait to see what kinds of antics the Republicans try to pull in the Senate. - jongleur
Write4Life, Thank you for such a personal and poignant article. My wife and I, albeit in our 20's, had three beautiful children after two miscarriages and they are all gifts. Maryann, your article touched me and I couldn't agree with you more. If all pregnancies were terminated unless there was a guarantee the offspring would be perfect--then none of us would be here because nobody is perfect. - jongleur
DelilahStarling, I am a loyal admirer and it wasn't my intent to attack you in any way, just point out the paradox of the alarmist H1N1 health risks juxtaposed with the known adverse health effects of these irresponsibly produced/promoted and toxic vaccines. - jongleur
But even more sad and disappointing is that you, a respected environmental activist, are an advocate of the H1N1 vaccine, a rushed-to-market concoction that contains known and unacceptably high levels of toxic incredients like mercury and squalene known to cause autism, birth defects, GBS, and severe autoimmune diseases.
Here are some reports from Allvoices colleagues that discuss the health risks of the H1N1 vaccine:
Does your concern and respect and activism for the environment stop cold at the skin, like our bodies are somehow impervious to deadly toxins? Or is it OK to poison our bodies, but not our air, land, or water? I have seen the devastation that environmental injuries from toxic chemicals pervasive in our environment have caused to the body, the mind, and the spirit and I have no intention of being vaccinated.
robertweller, Thank you for your excellent coverage of this unfolding saga. Seeking a few minutes in the spotlight is innocuous, but exploiting your children, perpetuating a lie, wasting public resources and taxpayer funds, and yanking innocent heartstrings--is tragic and unforgivable. Shame on Mr. Heene! - jongleur
CaliforniaMike, Thank you for another spot on assessment of the situation. Colleagues in Europe have work/life balance, get gobs of paid vacations, company cars, guaranteed employment--while I here in the good 'ol USA have consistently worked 60-80 hr. weeks with minimal vacation time--and NO medical insurance. I figuratively vomit when I hear our "leaders" cower to political/PAC pressures and not consider a pubic option--yet forcing every American to buy insurance from those big insurance pirates that are spending millions and millions in lobbying efforts that are obviously paying off for them--now and well into the future.
I consider un-American every mean-spirited conservative, republican, democrat, et al. that purposely disrupts the political process and derails any possibility of a public option. What ever happened to love thy neighbor?
DelilahStarling, Thank you for another illuminating article and keeping the global warming conversation alive. The earth has been circling the sun for billions of years, yet the concepts of liberalism and conservatism are at best hundreds of years old. While polarized political factions bicker, the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate and political labels will be extinct along with the rest of us. The earth will heal itself without humanity--too bad we can't heal our differences and take action before it's too late. - jongleur
Write4Life, Shocking, but not surprising! I'm speechless because all my worst nightmares, like bad Hollywood movies, seem to be coming true before my eyes. I frankly no longer feel safe to live in this country and worry about the future of my children and grandchildren.
We've watched it happen and many of us screamed in the streets to prevent some of this insanity, but were ignored. The Patriot Act gave sweeping powers to various authorities while stealing our constitutional rights, the unwarranted spying on U.S. citizens and sophisticated surveillance capabilities, huge and mega-funded military/industrial/prison complex and "police-ification" of America (as we saw recently in actions against peaceful protests in Philadelphia at G20 and White House), and we're paying for unnecessary wars and shameful bailouts and sending billions in aid and weaponry all over the world--while our personal security and net worth has waned.
I lead a natural lifestyle, using alternative healthcare options, eat as organic as possible without chemicals and pesticides, and stay away from doctors and medications and rarely get the sniffles. I have enough mercury in my dental work that I won't tolerate more in my diet or vaccines, especially those rushed to market by profiteering big pharma over some flu fear frenzy. And now immunizations apparently becoming compulsory by our government--under the threat of martial law?
The motives are very suspicious, indeed. Will our lives be a reenactment of George Orwell’s 1984? Or are they already?
Maryann, Spot on! You're right that it is up to the American people to work together to solve the nation's problems and demand a stop--with our votes and vocal chords--to the congressional circus act that's been going on. I, too, have never seen such mean-spirited partisanship in my lifetime and the current status quo can no longer be tolerated.
Our public servants think we're here to serve them, keep our mouths shut, and just consume, consume, consume. Poppycock! Personally, I think we should throw them all out of office and start over fresh, and send greedy corporations to reform school by closing our pocketbooks to them.
We can all agree to disagree, but must collectively jump into action without wasting any more time. I appreciate the varied perspectives and conversations here on Allvoices and find that if we "check our egos at the door" we have more in common that most of us want to admit to. Maryann, thank you again for the great recipes to help save this country. Today's the perfect day to don our aprons and start cooking up a storm--together. Our children our counting on us!
CaliforniaMike, Thank you for the story and it's unfortunate that lunatics like Ahmadinejad get prime time interviews and airtime to spew their fanatical lies and mean-spiriteness. As one who lost relatives in the Holocaust I am frankly insulted by both this evil man and Ms. Couric for giving him the podium. - jongleur
AmandaKeller, Thank you for another great "no nonsense" article and I always appreciate your sincere conservative perspectives and well-articulated points that provoke thought and foster mutual respect and understanding.
Gosh, questioning our elected (and selected) "leaders" and demanding responsible actions, full accountability, and no double standards? Imagine that. I think all of us should expect those qualities in our public servants, despite one's political bend.
I don't know where the sense of entitlement comes from in a vast majority of our elected/selected folk and I think Obama and his family should be more comfortable in that big ol' White House, getting down to business, kicking the congressional shenanigans in the rear, and solving some of the real problems here on the ground in America and stop tromping all over the world burning cash and fossil fuels, especially to doing a sales job for the Olympics--which I personally consider a complete waste of time, money, and just another "feel good" distraction to keep our eyes off the war, the tanked economy, lack of health care for millions, joblessness and foreclosures, poverty and crime, et al.
Thanks again Amanda for bringing us all back down to earth once again!
Write4Life, You are the consummate conservative "voice of reason" and it would be a dream if every conservative and every Republican were as sensible and open-minded as you! - jongleur
winds7seas, You've captured my sentiments exactly! Insurance companies have already proven to care more about shareholder profits than the health of the American public. - jongleur
Redhanded101, As one of 43.5 million uninsured American citizens--and with a wife with a life threatening illness--I am insulted by your conjecture that a public option meant nothing months ago. Moreover, I'm frankly fed up with your labels (e.g. Libs) that only serve to polarize this country and the health care discussion. I pay thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket medical expenses every year and do not seek medical treatment in all but extreme cases due to the lack of insurance and unavailability of affordable coverage without outrageous deductibles and exclusions.
I don't much trust our government to run anything or spend money wisely--but I trust private insurers literally zero. Privatization equates to corporate profiteering and continuing to marginalize millions of millions of Americans.
