“SAUDIS REJECT AMERICAN APPROACH TO MIDEAST PEACE Prince Faisal calls for immediate final status talks. (no confidence building measures) and “Depressing signs from Riyadh, Ramallah and Damascus.” Upon retuning from the US, I wrote a blog but never got around to posting it. I asked the question; how many years would it take for the Middle-East overcome President Obamas well intended but tragically flawed policy initiatives? I was especially concerned with the effect of his overtures to Syria and the results this would likely have on Lebanon. Over the past few years, as Syria tried to duck the accusations of its involvement in the murder of Lebanese PM Harriri by lowering its profile in Lebanon, American’s policy of sanctions and withdrawal of its ambassador sent a clear message of both disapproval and a subtle announcement that Syria was under observation and needed to be cautious in its policies towards Lebanon. And it was! By announcing the return of an American ambassador plus individual high level visits to Damascus the new administration was giving a message that Assad had some wiggle room. It on Lebanon that he will wiggle! The latest announcement that America was resuming its sanctions against Syria will prove interesting when there is also an American ambassador in Damascus. However the latest news from the M-E, that the Arab world has returned or should I say remained in the place of three no’s reminiscent of the post ’67 three no’s that were the policy decisions in the Arab...

By Rabbi, Dr. Moshe Dror When we think of the Synagogue, we often think of its Hebrew term- Bet Knesset. The word Synagogue is from the ancient Greek: meaning The House of Assembly, a translation of the Hebrew: Bet- house; Knesset- assembly. In other words we conjure up an image of some sort of building. In our cultural memory we think of some sort of bricks and mortar building and the synagogue that we are members of or that someone else is a member of. This is compounded when we also are knowledgeable enough to also know that we are talking about Bet Midrash and Bet Tefillah. Bet Midrash is most often translated as House of Study, and Bet Tefillah is translated as House of Prayer. Notice that all three aspects of this institution use the word Bet and are all translated as: House of… True, true. But what about the classical phrase of Bet Yisrael- the House of Israel. What house are we talking about here? We do not mean the State of Israel. To confine the meaning of the word Bet to a physical building: house- is just too limiting. If you look at any good Hebrew dictionary you can see many other meanings associated with the idea of Bayit. Of course one of them is a house, but certainly not the only one. So too, the idea of a Bet Knesset can mean a building, or course. But that is not limited to a building. Indeed, if...

By Dr. Rabbi Moshe Dror I would like to use these blogs to explicate, probe, explore and play with these interfaces and interactions of Cyber and Or for the next century. What might be the practical implications and applications of this? The N-gen is the Net Generation population cohort who are now the children of the baby boom, aged 13-30 or so. Other designations are also Y-generation. They are the generation that has come of age in the digital age-hence the designation “Net” for the Internet and the use of the ‘Cyber” designation. I will deal both with some of the characteristics of who they are and relate to the Jewish aspect of these same people the Jewish n-gen population cohort. Perhaps for the first time in all of human history- Children are authorities on a central innovation. If you read any of the ongoing descriptions of what is going on with the youth and the Jewish youth of the world- no matter who writes and no matter where you read the one common descriptor is such words as: crisis, tragedy, problems, emergency, disaster- etc., etc. We wring our hands and ask “what did we do …”, or some variation of: “What went wrong”? I would like to suggest that it is exactly the OPPOSITE that is the case. This is perhaps the most creative and innovative generation in a long time. Obviously, each generation is unique and functions in its particular historical setting. This generation has a set of...
