It is heartening that in India and Pakistan eunuchs, otherwise known as hijras, are getting recognition of their legal and social rights. I recall that in my childhood they were present at most weddings & danced and sang bawdy songs much to the merriment of the wedding guests. Nowadays it is less common to see them at weddings.

Although they are sometimes mistreated by the police, they enjoy some protection on account of the superstition that it brings bad luck to persecute a hijra.

Young seminary students, many of them from Sindh and Punjab, were misled by their teachers and the leader Sufi Mohammad and brought to the Pak-Afghan border around October November 2001. The Taliban border guards tried to discourage the seminarians from entering Afghanistan, but Sufi Mohammad brushed the Afghan guards aside and marched the youngsters to the front. Scores were killed during US air raids and the remaining youth met a grim fate as described above.

The son in law of the same Sufi Mohammad is none other than Fazlullah, who recently led the rebellion in Swat, which the Pak Army has crushed. Fazlullah has reportedly been wounded in an air raid, and is believed to be holed up in a cave in Swat.

I do not agree with this approach, which is like trying to cram two meals in the time meant for a single meal. One ends up with a less than memorable high school experience and a sub-standard college experience. There is no substitute for spemding three or four years interacting with highly intelligent classmates and building up relations that last a lifetime.
