With complete numbers for the month of June in, it's clear that the Nintendo Wii still leads the pack in terms of console sales. In the United States alone, the Wii sold 666,000 units. The Sony Playstation 3 was a distant second with 405,500 unit sales. But at least Sony can celebrate a victory over Microsoft: the XBox 360 sputtered into third place with 219,800 sales.
Sony and Microsoft aren't sitting still though. One of their main strategies has been to add additional hard disk space to their cutting edge systems allowing them to house more gaming and video content. The minimum capacity for Sony is 80 GB while it is 60 GB for Microsoft. Nintendo has not been competing on disk space: its success can be attributed to user friendly controls and a plethora of easily accessible games conducive to social bonding.
Nintendo has sold 10.9 million Wiis to date, far ahead of the rivals, even the XBox which was released a whole year earlier. The economic recession seems to be having minimal impact on the gaming industry with console sales having grown 54% over the last year.
