Scientists in Southern Wales have stumbled upon a species of slug that consumes flesh with it's layers of razor-sharp 'teeth.' The slug, pictured to the left, feeds mainly upon earthworms by engulfing them under its lethal underside and slowly reeling it in, ingesting it alive. These predators can lengthen to as much as 5 inches and are white in color, a feature that won them the scientific name Selenochlamys ysbryda, ysbryda being Welsh for "ghost." In addition to their creepy color, the slugs are eyeless, suggesting that they may have developed underground.
Scientists are as of yet uncertain as to where the slugs came from, but speculate that they may have originated in Armenia, Turkey, or Georgia, and arrive in Wales via potted plants. The monsters emerge during the night and slurp up unsuspecting earthworms. Scientists first learned of their existence in 2006, but not enough research has been conducted to determine the ecological implications of these carnivorous slugs.
