Sandy Koufax is arguably the best pitcher to play the game ... when he was on. He could throw a 100 mph fastball and had a curve that dropped so quickly that one time his catcher stood up to catch the ball and it hit him in the shins. Koufax benefitted from phenomenal physical attributes and athletic ability. Although only 6'1", he could palm and dunk a basketball, hold and roll around 5 baseballs in his hand at one time. In an exhibition basketball game while in high school he showed up the starting guard for the Knicks (can't remember the name, foggy on this), was highly recruited by NBA. When he finally got his pitching under control, no one could touch him for the last 5 seasons of his career, and unfortunately he retired early. The best batters in the league hated to face him during these years because they had no faith they could hit his pitching. And then there was the perfect game ... ! The only aspect of his career that would not qualify him as the best is his good years were so short. His arm gave out very early. I loved watching him (but I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan very early with the exception that I loved Willie Mays).
