Ron Paul's Biography

Ron Paul, american medical doctor and Republican U.S. Congressman was born on August 20, 1935. He is the Congressman for Texas' 14th congressional district, which encompasses south and southwest of the Greater Houston region including Galveston.

Dr. Paul is a native of Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Gettysburg College and the Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. From 1963 to 1968, Ronald Ernest Paul served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ron Paul worked as an obstetrician gynecologist and delivered more than 4,000 babies.

In 1970s, Ron Paul made his entry in politics. He failed a Congressional bid in 1974. Two years later, he was victorious in a special election to replace Representative Robert R. Casey, who had resigned. The same year, Paul established the Foundation for Rational Economics and Education (FREE).

After not being able to retain his post in general election, Ron Paul retried his luck in 1978. In his political career, Paul emerged as a strong critic of the country's banking and financial systems. In 1984, Ron Paul made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate against Phil Gramm and was later succeeded in the House of Representatives by Tom DeLay.

In 1988, Ron Paul made a comeback in politics to become the presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party. However, he differed with Libertarians over the abortion issue and came in third after receiving almost 500,000 votes in the general election. In 1996, Ron Paul triumphed over Greg Laughlin in the general election and has remained a member of the House of Representatives ever since. Dr. Ron Paul is the only candidate for the presidency who strongly advocates immediate cessation of the war in Iraq. He also favors bringing home all U.S. troops stationed overseas.

Being an outspoken critic of current American foreign and monetary policy, Ron Paul has also written his economic theories. He has expressed his opinions and thoughts in his various books including, "Gold, Peace and Prosperity: The Birth of a New Currency"," The Case for Gold: A Minority Report of the U.S. Gold Commission" and "Abortion and Liberty".

Ron Paul has been married to his high school love, Carol Wells, since 1957. The couple has five children. Paul's son, Rand Paul, was elected to the United States Senate for Kentucky in 2011, making his father the first Representative in history to serve concurrently with his son in the Senate.

On May 13, 2011, Ron Paul officially announced he would run again in 2012 for the Republican presidential nomination
