Sir John Major, KG, CH, PC, ACIB (born 29 March 1943) is a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997. Major remains the most successful Prime Minister in British history in terms of number of votes and popularity, gaining a record-breaking fourteen million votes in the 1992 general election. Major was Leader of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997 and held the posts of Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Cabinet of Margaret Thatcher. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Huntingdon from 1979 to 2001.
