Person Biography:(required) <p> </p> <p>George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (Greek: Γεώργιος Κυριάκος Παναγιώτου); June 25, 1963 in Hertfordshire, England is an English singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the 1980s when he formed the pop duo Wham! along with his school friend Andrew Ridgeley.  Michael is the son of a Greek Cypriot restaurateur and an English mother.</p> <p> </p> <p>Michael’s first solo hit was “Careless Whisper” – a song Michael wrote at age 17 while riding the bus – was recorded while still a member of Wham.  The song went on the sell over six million copies and top music charts around the world.  As a member of Wham, Michael and Ridgeley sold 25 million albums.</p> <p> </p> <p>Before embarking on his long and successful solo career, George Michael was the first white male singer to perform a duet with the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin when they sang “I Knew You Were Waiting”.  The song went on to top the charts in the US, Europe, and Australia.</p> <p> </p> <p>George Michael has sold over 100 million albums – more than the population of his homeland – and topped the music charts worldwide.  As a solo artists Michael has packed venues from concert halls to Wembley Stadium.  </p> <p> </p> <p>While popular as a member of Wham, Michael proved that it was as a solo artist that he came into his full potential as a songwriter and performer.  Michael’s solo debut album “Faith” sold over 25 million total copies and was awarded the Diamond Award for selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone.  The album went five times platinum in the United Kingdom.</p> <p> </p> <p>Over the years he has performed duets with Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Beyonce, “X Factor” winner Joe McElderry, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John.  Michael also performed with the surviving members of Queen for a tribute to fallen Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury.  During his career George Michael has won three Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, MTV Awards, three Grammy Awards, and three Brit Awards.  Michael has seen all seven of his albums certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry and six of those seven went multi platinum.  In the United States, along with the Diamond Award for “Faith” the RIAA – Recording Industry Association of America – has certified “Listen Without Prejudice” and “Ladies and Gentlemen: the Best of George Michael” as multi platinum.</p> <p> </p> <p>Among his numerous accomplishments George Michael while a member of Wham was the first western band to appear in China, participated in the 1984 project “Do They Know it’s Christmas”, donated all of the royalties from the holiday single “Next Christmas” to Ethiopian famine relief, and the proceeds from his duet with Sir Elton John “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” were donated to the children’s charity Rainbow Trust and London Lighthouse – an AIDS hospice.  Michael joined other fellow singers including Madonna and Lisa Stansfield in contributing to”Red Hot + Dance”; an album from the Red Hot Organization charity.  While other artists contributed existing songs, Michael donated three brand new tunes for the project.  Over his career, George Michael has quietly made numerous contributions to charitable organizations.</p> <p> </p> <p>But all has not been sunshine and roses for George Michael.  There was a disagreement between Michael and his record company Sony that ended up in court.  A 1998 arrest in Los Angeles for lewd behaviour led Michael to “come out” as gay.  In the past few years, Michael has had a number of run ins with the British police over driving while under the influence.  As a result Michael has had to serve a short jail term, performed community service, and has had his driver’s license suspended twice.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Discofgraphy:</strong><br />"Faith"<br />"Listen Without Prejudice"<br />"Older"<br />"Ladies and Gentlemen: the Best of George Michael"<br />"Songs from Another Century"<br />"Patience"<br />"Twenty-five"<br /><br /></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p>
