Person Biography:(required) <p> </p> <p>Christopher James "Chris" Christie, a Republican, is the 55th and incumbent governor of New Jersey. He is the first Republican to have won a statewide election in New Jersey in 12 years. Christie, an attorney, previously served as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey. He was a freeholder of Morris County during 1995-1997 and director of the board of freeholders, Morris County, in 1997.</p> <p>48-year-old Chris Christie was born on September 6, 1962, in Newark, NJ, to Bill Christie and Sondra Grasso Christie. He was raised in Livingston, Essex County, NJ. He is married to Mary Pat Foster and they have four children – Andrew, Sarah, Patrick, Bridget. Christie is of Irish and Sicilian descent.</p> <p><strong>Education:</strong></p> <p>Chris Christie did his high school graduation from Livingston High School. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1984 and Seton Hall University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 1987.</p> <p><strong>Political Career:</strong></p> <p>In 1994, Chris Christie was elected as a Republican to the Morris County, New Jersey, Board of Chosen Freeholders.</p> <p>Christie filed papers to run for governor on January 8, 2009. In the primary on June 2, he got the Republican nomination with 55% of the vote. On November 3, he won with 48.5% of the vote.</p> <p>On January 19, 2010, Christie took office as governor of New Jersey. He chose to stay in Mendham, New Jersey, with his family, instead of moving into the official governor's mansion.</p> <p><strong>Positions on Issues:</strong></p> <p><strong>Abortion:</strong> Christie is against abortion; he is pro-life.</p> <p><strong>Same-Sex Marriage:</strong> Chris Christie favors New Jersey's current law that allows same-sex couples to form civil unions. However, he has said that he would veto any bill legalizing same-sex marriage because he believes that marriage should be exclusively between one man and one woman.</p> <p><strong>Marijuana:</strong> Christie is in favor of medical marijuana. However, he doesn’t support New Jersey's proposed medical marijuana bill, which would allow state-registered patients of certain illnesses to grow marijuana plants for personal medicinal use or purchase the drug at a licensed center.</p> <p><strong>Guns:</strong> Christie supports strict and aggressive enforcement of NJ’s current gun laws.</p> <p><strong>Organized Crime: </strong>Christie believes that as United States attorney he was always tough on organized crime. However, he still stands by a 2007 comment he made and in which he said, "the Mafia is much more prominent on HBO than in New Jersey."</p> <p><strong>Illegal Immigration: </strong>Chris Christie believes that undocumented immigrants are not criminals unless they have re-entered the country after being deported. As such, he believes that dealing with improperly documented foreign nationals is the job of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, not of the U.S. Attorney's Office.</p> <p>Christie is against the section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, according to which, local law enforcement officers can be granted power to perform immigration law enforcement functions.   </p> <p><strong>Education: </strong>Christie is in favor of the state granting tax credits to parents whose children go to private and parochial schools. It should be noted that Christie’s own children attend Catholic parochial school.         He is also in favor of introducing state-funded vouchers for parents of students in failing school districts. Christie also intends to build more charter schools in cities. He is in favor of merit pay for teachers.</p> <p><strong>Public Employee Pensions: </strong>Although Chris Christie had opposed any change in pension benefits for current, future, and retiree firefighters and law enforcement officers in his campaign calling the pension agreement as "a sacred trust", as governor, he supported and signed into law a bill that abrogated the agreement and decreased pensions.</p> <p><strong>Energy and Environment: </strong>Before becoming governor, Christie stated that he believed that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was too big and "killing business" and that the agency would be his first target for government reduction.</p> <p>Christie had also expressed intentions to concurrently encourage growth in the manufacturing sector of NJ and increase the state's capability to produce alternative energy. He has proposed a list of policy measures to achieve this.</p> <p><strong>Taxes:</strong> Christie has vowed not to raise taxes. He has also expressed intentions to lower the state income and business taxes, but also said that this might not occur immediately. Christie has not yet taken a position on the state's property tax rebate program.</p> <p><strong>Candidacy in 2012 Presidential Election:</strong></p> <p>Chris Christie is firm that he will not run for president in 2012. The reasons are that he “does not feel ready” and his “family needs him.” Addressing increased speculations about his run for the presidency, he, in an interview, went as far as to suggest that the only way he could convince people of his lack of interest in the election would be to commit suicide.</p>
