Barry Manilow (born June 17, 1943) is an American singer–songwriter, musician, arranger, producer, conductor, and performer, best known for such recordings as "Could It Be Magic", "Mandy", "Can't Smile Without You", and "Copacabana (At the Copa)."
He was born Barry Alan Pincus in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Raised by his mother, Grandma Esther, and Grandpa Joe; Manilow got his musical start on the accordion at age seven. From there, it was the piano, an introduction to west coast jazz, and an acceptance into the Julliard School of Music. Manilow worked in the mailroom of CBS while at Julliard and moved on to musical director of a show titled “Callback”. Manilow was married to his high school sweetheart Susan Deixler for a short time.
Though the world didn’t know it yet, they were about to get their first taste of the legendary showman when he began writing and performing commercial jingles for State Farm, Dr. Pepper, McDonalds, KFC, Stridex (acne cleanser), Band-Aid, Bathroom Bowl Blues (for a toilet bowl cleasner), and Pepsi. Later Manilow would perform the jingles in what he called “A Very Strange Medley” in his concerts.
Manilow’s next break came in the form of a vivacious red head named Bette Midler who hired him to be her arranger, conductor, and piano player. Midler also gave Manilow a chance to perform a few of his own songs during the shows. It was at this point that Manilow met record executive Clive Davis who signed him to Bell Records – later Arista.
After reworking an English pop song called “Brandy” by Scott English, Manilow released “Mandy” in 1974 and shot to fame. “Mandy” became the first of a string of hits that has lead Manilow to selling over 80 million albums and the title of legendary entertainer and showman; and the man mega-star Frank Sinatra once told the British press, “he’s next.”
Throughout his career Manilow has seen his music appear in “Despicable Me”, “Dancing with the Stars”, “Paul Bart: Mall Cop”, “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”, “So You Think You Can Dance”, “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”, “Family Guy”, “Everybody Hates Chris”, “The Heartbreak Kid”, “Torvill & Dean’s Dancing on Ice”, “You, Me, and Dupree”, the documentary “Olhar Estraneiro”, “ER”, the video documentary “King and Queen of Hearts”, “Two and a Half Men”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Angel”, “Unconditional Love”, the documentrary “Bowling for Columbine”, “The Simpsons” the TV series “Oz”, the TV series “Sex and the City”, “Dr. Dolittle 2”, “Ally McBeal”, “Keeping the Faith”, “Hope Floats”, “Friends”, “The Pebble and the Penguin”, “Thumbelina”, “The Vanishing”, “In the Mood”, “Heat”, “Pretty in Pink”, the TV movie “Copacabana”, “Tribute”, “The Muppet Show”, “Foul Play”, and “Looking for Mr. Goodbar”
Over the years Manilow has performed with Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Phyllis Hyman, Kid Creole, Diane Schuur, and KT Oslen; as well as, the Les Brown, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Harry James, and Glen Miller orchestras when he recorded “Swinging with the Big Bands”.
Manilow has had over 30 albums on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and 10 of those debuted in the Top 10. Other accomplishments include induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, won a Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, and a Grammy Award. While he has yet to win a Oscar Award, he has been nominated.
Manilow has frequently been a target of unkind reviews from the critics, but his albums sell well and have earned him five platinum albums from the British Phonographic Industry – BPI and 13 platinum albums with six of those going multi platinum from the Recording Industry Association of America – RIAA.
For the past six years Manilow has been in residence in Las Vegas with the occasional road gig. Through his Manilow Music Project, Manilow has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in music and musical instruments to schools.
