The Rangers won the rights to negotiate with Japan's best pitcher after winning a blind auction to pay his former team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, a $51.7 million posting fee. Is Yu Darvish worth it? That's the $111 million question. Darvish is 6-foot-5 and can throw seven different pitches with pinpoint command. And he's only 25. Out other highly touted Japanese pitchers, including Daisuke Matsuzaka and Kei Igawa, failed to thrive in the MLB. But Rangers GM Jon Daniels and president Nolan Ryan believe Darvish is different because of his size, his command and his work ethic. Darvish enjoys rock star status in Japan, so he should be able to handle the intense scrutiny he will receive from the American and Japanese media. One thing is for sure. Darvish's celebrity cache will give the Rangers whole new fan base in Asia. The Rangers will introduce Darvish at a press conference tonight at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
