Following the Chinese President Hu Jintao's "anti-Westernization," the Vice President Xi Jinping stressed "ideological control" to the universities. Critics believe that as the next leader of the CCP, Xi Jinping fears the reoccurrence of the 1989 student movement which might disrupt his smooth succession during the CCP 18th National Congress. The 20th national meeting on party-building in higher education institutions was held on January 4th in Beijing. In his talk, Xi Jinping described universities as a key ideological front for equipping young people with socialist values. He also mentioned to "strengthen concrete, effective measures to maintain so-called harmony and stability in higher education, reinforce routine management, and build a good atmosphere for a great victory of the CCP 18th National Congress."
