God enters into history to free humanity from the slavery of sin. This was said by Pope Benedict XVI, speaking to the faithful before the Angelus prayer on the first Sunday of Lent. Against the plan of God for the salvation of all men, the Devil has opposed with all his strength, as the Gospel of the temptation of Jesus tells us. But, the Pope says, entering this liturgical season means siding each time with Christ against sin, facing - both as individuals and as a Church - the spiritual battle against the spirit of evil. Pope Benedict then prayed for the victims of this week's earthquake in Japan and said that the Roman Curia will be beginning its annual spiritual exercises.
