Park Chung-hee (September 30, 1917 – October 26, 1979) was a former ROK Army general and president of South Korea (the Republic of Korea) from 1961 to 1979. He has been criticized for his authoritarian way of ruling the country (especially after 1971), but is also credited with the industrialization of the Republic of Korea through export-led growth. His rule was ended by his assassination in 1979. He was named one of the top 100 Asians of the Century by Time magazine (1999).
