José Manuel Zelaya Rosales (born September 20, 1952) is a Honduran politician. He was elected President of Honduras on January 27, 2006. A son of a wealthy businessman, he inherited his father's nickname "Mel." Zelaya was involved in his ranch, logging and timber trade businesses. During his presidency, Zelaya was perceived as moving sharply to the political left. On June 28, 2009, in the 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis, he was detained by the military—acting on orders of the Honduran Supreme Court—but then the military exiled him in an event that has been condemned internationally as a coup d'état.
