Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik Gillibrand (pronounced Jilla-brand), born December 9, 1966 is an American politician, a member of the Democratic Party, and the junior United States Senator from New York. She was elected twice to the United States House of Representatives, representing New York's 20th congressional district from January 3, 2007 to January 26, 2009. She was the first female representative of the district and the first Democrat to represent the district since Edward W. Pattison left office in 1979. She was also a member of the Blue Dog Coalition during her tenure in the House.
