The African Union has extended the mandate of its commission chief, Jean Ping, for another six months. The move comes after Ping, who is from Gabon, and his challenger for the post, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, failed to secure an outright majority. A new commission chief will now be elected at the AU's next summit to be held in Lilongwe, Malawi, in June. Meanwhile, a high-level committee will look into the stringent rules that led to the election deadlock.
