CCP temporarily shuts controversial art exhibit By Dennis Carcamo The Philippine Star Updated August 09, 2011 10:24 AM MANILA, Philippines - The main gallery of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, where the controversial art exhibit was located, was temporarily closed starting today as a "preventive security measure." Virgie Lamoso of the CCP's Museum and Visual Arts said management has decided to shut down the main gallery because one of the exhibits has been vandalized. "May nasira na kasi yung isa sa art exhibit," Lamoso said in a phone interview. The exhibit titled "Kulo," which features the works of 32 artists from the University of Santo Tomas, was launched June 17. Pieces included in the exhibit where the images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary mixed with other visual arts, which has gained the ire of the Catholic Church, branding the portrayal of the two religious icons as "blasphemous" and "sacrilege." Some of the pieces are combined with phallic objects and one featured a condom, which flared up the Catholic bishops. Lamoso said the CCP management has yet to decide when to re-open the exhibit to the public. The exhibit was supposed to run up to August 21. Earlier, a Church-based organization, Pro-Life Philippines has threatened to file criminal charges against the CCP management and the artists before the Office of the Ombudsman for the "offensive" art work.
