She was born in Brooklyn in 1911 and is the author of nineteen books, including the National Jewish Book Award-winning biography Raquela (1978) and Witness (2007), a chronicle of her 80-year career as a correspondent and photojournalist, during which time she covered such events as the rise of Nazi Germany. She is the subject of a new documentary, Ahead of Time, which premiered last fall.
