Czesław Miłosz [ˈt͡ʂɛswaf ˈmiwɔʂ] ( listen); (June 30, 1911—August 14, 2004) was a Polish poet, prose writer and translator. From 1961 to 1978 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is widely considered one of the greatest contemporary Polish poets.
