Charles McArthur Ghankay Taylor (born January 28, 1948) served as President of Liberia from August 2, 1997 to August 11, 2003. He was once Africa's most prominent warlord during the First Liberian Civil War in the early 1990s, was elected president at the end of that conflict, was subsequently forced into exile, and is now in detention at the International Criminal Court, where he faces trial by the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
