When Mark Arbib resigned as a Senator for New South Wales, a joint sitting of the New South Wales Parliament on 6 March 2012 appointed former NSW Premier, the Hon. Bob Carr to fill the vacancy, There was no other nomination. The Constitution requires that the replacement senator come from the same party as the departing senator and remain so up to the time the replacement senator takes his or her place. Here on 13 March 2012, the President of the Senate recites the events leading to the appointment of Senator-elect Carr is admitted. He is invited to swear the Oath of Allegience to The Queen, Her Heirs and Successors which he does.
