Under UN sanctions, many countries have frozen overseas assets of the Libya government and members of Muammar Gaddafi's family. Both the Libyan government and the opposition are now competing to get access to those assets. War coffers on both sides are drying up. One hundred and forty billion US dollars of frozen assets are up for grabs, as the Libyan government and rebels vie for the much needed cash. After a cabinet meeting in Tripoli on Tuesday, Libya's Prime Minister Baghdadi Mahmudi called on the international community to free those assets. He says he is willing to negotiate with the National Transitional Council on how to use the money. He said, "Investment in those foreign assets will continue for the benefit of the Libyan nation. Therefore we call on the security council of (to) free those assets so we can use them for the advantage of all Libyans." In a surprise visit to Benghazi, Denmark's Foreign Minister vowed her country's support for the Transitional National Council. Lene Espersen said, "Denmark regards the TNC the sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people. " According to rebel leaders, they have won support from Denmark, on helping the Libyan people win back the assets. Ali Essawy, Deputy Head of National Transitional Council Executive Bureau, said, "Denmark is ready to help the Libyan people get access to frozen assets, together with the European Union."
