Abdul Rahim Wardak (born: 1940 in Wardak, Afghanistan) is the current Defense Minister of Afghanistan, where he focuses on security sector reform, state building, and fighting terrorism and narcotics trafficking. He was appointed Defense Minister by President Hamid Karzai on December 23, 2004. Before this appointment General Wardak was the deputy Defense Minister to the former, Mohammad Qasim Fahim. In the past, General Wardak was a national Mujahideen resistance leader who fought the Soviet occupation in the Soviet war in Afghanistan. He is an ethnic Pashtun from the Wardak province. His diplomacy has been instrumental promoting ethnic reconciliation due to his lineage from tribal chieftains with strong Pashtun relationships with all ethnic groups of the country.
