March 29, 2011 The legal profession is finding it easier to make the business case for virtual desktops, particularly to ease management of desktops located in branch offices, using Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Unidesk® virtual desktop management software. One firm that has recently adopted Unidesk to achieve the ideal VDI combination of low operational costs and a flexible end user experience is Wyche, PA of Greenville, S.C., recently named to the list of Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Wyche has replaced its PCs with Pano Logic zero clients, and is implementing Unidesk on its VMware vSphere infrastructure to create storage-efficient virtual desktops, deliver applications, manage operating system patches, and enable desktop customization. According to Tom Crowe, IT Manager at Wyche, We like the idea of separating each desktop into OS, application and personalization layers' so that each can be managed independently from a single master image. Not only is it a time-saver for our IT team, but we don't have the same data sharing issues we had when we tried to deliver applications using application virtualization. With that approach, either the applications couldn't communicate with each other, or we couldn't package them at all. Unidesk can package, update, and deliver all types of applications, including plug-ins to Microsoft Office applications, and exchange data between all of them with ease. VDI provides valuable benefits to legal firms and service providers, offering greater security, higher availability, worker mobility, and reduced cost of ownership over the long term, since desktops are hosted on data center servers and accessed through low energy zero or thin clients. But deploying VDI has been problematic for the legal profession for a number of reasons:     Many applications including commonly used document management systems, anti-virus programs, and document preparation plug-ins cannot be virtualized with application virtualization tools     Increasingly, computer-savvy legal assistants require highly custom persistent desktops and continually need new applications, rapidly increasing VDI storage requirements.     Traditional shared-image approaches to VDI can't be applied to persistent desktops, making operating system patching the same error-prone and time-consuming process demanded by physical desktops. Unidesk solves all of these problems with a single solution that employs patent-pending desktop layering technology to virtualize and manage every part of the desktop operating system, applications, and user...A natural side effect of Unidesk's ability to share OS and application layers across many desktops is that VDI storage requirements are drastically reduced, often up to 70%. Unidesk can be used as the management, personalization, and provisioning platform for any VDI access solution, including VMware View, Citrix® XenDesktop®, and Pano Logic, to expand VDI deployments to knowledge workers and realize greater operational efficiencies. About Unidesk Unidesk ( http://www.unidesk.com ) provides the virtual desktop management software platform that organizations of all sizes require to successfully centralize desktops on data center servers.
