January 20, 2011 SRC, a leading provider of document creation and clinical information solutions, has announced the roll out of digital dictation at Whipps Cross University Hospital. SRC has worked with the Trust on successful pilot schemes in Orthopaedics and Gastroenterology to deliver significant efficiency and productivity benefits. The solution is now being offered to clinical teams across the entire Trust. The digital dictation solution has already been taken up in Cardiology, Diabetes, ENT, Histopathology and Neurology, where consultants now dictate their notes into digital recorders. The voice files can be flagged as urgent or routine and then automatically sent to the medical secretaries for typing. The solution, which is based on the Winscribe software, is integrated with the Trust's McKesson Total Care Patient Administration System, using the standard HL7 protocol. The integration allows documents to be automatically generated and filled out with patient details, when a secretary opens a dictation. There are now over 15 NHS Trusts using variations of the PAS integration and template manager, which forms part of SRC's overall Clinical Correspondence solution. Lynne Fenwick, Head of Information Services at Whipps Cross University Hospital, said: Secretaries now spend a third less time typing. The time they have saved is now spent doing other work to improve the patient experience, such as answering telephones and responding to patients' questions. Moving to digital dictation changes the way staff work for the better, she added. Medical secretaries are now able to share their work, for example, making sure there is no backlog building up when someone is sick or on annual leave. Managers can also review system usage, workflow and productivity at the touch of a button. The Trust's board has now agreed to offer the SRC digital dictation solution Trust-wide. The implementation will be phased and based on requests from the various clinical teams across the hospital. We don't want to impose this new solution on clinical teams, but would rather provide them with information from the pilots so they can decide if they have a need for it, said Lynne Fenwick. We are finding that clinicians and typists are telling colleagues how easy the SRC solution is to use, and how much time they are saving by removing manual processes. Now, more and more teams are knocking on my door asking for the solution. SRC has also deployed integrated speech recognition within the Trust. This allows consultants to draft letters using just their voice, to be reviewed and finalised either by the consultants or their secretaries. Lynne Fenwick said: We have found SRC to be very professional in their approach, innovative in the solutions they can offer and excellent at providing the support we need. They also offer a comprehensive and integrated range of solutions, which allow us to meet the varying requirements across the Trust. Chris Hart, CEO at SRC said: Working with Whipps Cross University Hospital has been a great experience. We are delighted that they are benefiting from the efficiency and time saving values of our solutions. We are very pleased to be building on this initial success and our strategic partnership, and are confident that we can help the Trust achieve even greater improvements in patient care and efficiency through our range of document creation and clinical information solutions and services.
