Since around the 1960s the equilibrium between water resources and population distribution in the world fell out of kilter, giving rise to numerous conflicts over water, especially in Africa, Asia and Europe. To a considerable extent, the growing disequilibrium derives from various political, social and economic developments in the modern world, as well as from the effects of climate change.
