I kept wondering whether the huge los alamos (poplars) that line El Rio Magdalena were leafing out. They were, indeed, at least two weeks ahead of the cottonwoods that line the banks of the Santa Cruz River below my home in Rio Rico. My first stop was at a Pemex service station at Imuris, about 60 miles south on Mexico's superhighway, Route 15.
