Turtle Island Foods Completes New Riverfront Production Facility in Oregon with a LiveRoof® Green Roof

Turtle Island Foods has topped off its new production facility with a 1,400 square foot green roof. The LiveRoof® Hybrid Green Roof System from LiveRoof, LLC was installed to complete a landscaped green space on the facility’s rooftop, which overlooks the Columbia River. Turtle Island Foods (Hood River, Ore.), the home of Tofurky®, is one of the nation’s largest brands of all-natural refrigerated and frozen meat alternatives, now sold in more than 10,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada. “Using a green roof to landscape the rooftop makes a wonderful green space for our employees and visitors to enjoy,” said Seth Tibbott, founder and president, Turtle Island Foods. “The green roof is in harmony with our company’s values...Green Building Council. “Our new facility has many sustainable elements and energy-saving features,” said Jamie Athos, vice president, operations. “But the green roof garden area is the highlight for visitors. They enjoy the setting and the view out to the river — and picking strawberries, too.”

According to Jeff Pickhardt of Key Development Corporation, during initial planning a green roof was included for its environmental benefits, such as reducing stormwater runoff and lowering the building’s energy needs by shading and insulating the rooftop. “Seth and Jamie re-imagined the green roof as the centerpiece of a pleasant, inviting outdoor area that would provide a valuable amenity,” he said. Key Development Corporation (Hood River, Ore.) partnered with Turtle Island Foods in the construction of the new 33,000-square-foot food processing facility, located at Point of Hood River, a half mile from downtown Hood River.

“The design of the green roof evolved,” said Mark VanderZaden, creative director, Surround Architecture (Portland, Ore.), project architect. “We specified deeper soil than the typical green roof so it could have areas to grow vegetables and taller accent plants, designed a bocce ball court, incorporate seating areas and walkways, and wired the roof for sound so music can be enjoyed outside...Flint explained that the entire project team agreed on the selection of LiveRoof. “LiveRoof is the system designed to establish a green roof as a naturally functioning, sustainable ecosystem on the rooftop,” she said. “That made it an especially fitting choice for Turtle Island Foods.”

In addition, the project team favored locally cultivated plants grown with local horticultural expertise. GreenFeathers, Inc., the Pacific Northwest regional distributor and grower for LiveRoof, is the green roof division of Blooming Nursery, Inc., one of Oregon’s largest wholesale nurseries with 100,000 square feet of greenhouses and more than 45 acres of growing fields. “We had confidence in GreenFeathers to supply quality plants, adapted to our region and suitable for the specific conditions and aesthetic goals of the project,” said Flint.

Most green roofs, including those installed with standard LiveRoof Modules, have 4.25 inches of soil. The Turtle Island Foods green roof features a unique combination of LiveRoof Deep (six-inch) and Maxx (eight-inch) Modules. The project utilizes 940 modules.

“For Turtle Island, we grew two special Sedum mixes with a total of 13 different types of Sedum,” said Grace Dinsdale, founder and president, Blooming Nursery and GreenFeathers. “With the depth of the modules, we were also able to use more than 270 individual accent plants, such as feather reed grass and dwarf fountain grass. These taller grass plants harmonize the landscape of the roof with the natural scenery visible across the river.”
