The Syrian American Council (SAC) and Future Movement-USA today strongly condemned the senseless car bomb attack in Lebanon and demanded the establishment of an independent special tribunal to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the bombing.
Friday’s attack in the Achrafieh district of the Lebanese capital Beirut killed three people, including top Lebanese security official Wissam al-Hassan, and injured more than a hundred civilians. Al-Hassan was Lebanon’s intelligence chief of the Internal Security Forces, and the man behind uncovering a recent Assad-linked bomb plot that led to the arrest of Michel Samaha, a Lebanese politician closely associated with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Hassan was a chief aide to former Lebanese prime minister the late Rafiq al-Hariri, and part of the investigation that implicated Syria and Assad-backed Lebanese militiain Hariri’s killing in 2005.
In a joint statement, the Syrian American Council and Future Movement-USA said: ”We offer our deepest condolences to the families and loved-ones of those killed in this heinous crime, and demand an independent international investigation of the bombing. Based on the Syrian government’s history of meddling in the internal affairs of Lebanon, we have no doubt that the Assad regime is behind this senseless crime that killed and injured many innocents especially given that he played an instrumental role in uncovering the plot to foment unrest in Lebanon. With the recent attacks on Turkey and Friday’s bombing in Lebanon, the Syrian regime is now clearly threatening the peace and stability of the entire region."
“Before it’s too late, the international community must support the Syrian people in toppling the Assad regime by establishing a no-fly zone to stop the aerial bombardment of Syrian cities and provide support to vetted elements of the Free Syrian Army to defend the Syrian people from Assad’s atrocities. The longer this conflict is prolonged, the more dangerous the situation becomes.”
SAC is a grassroots organization devoted to promoting educational, civic, economic, and human development, as well as advancing civil liberties and human dignity in Syria. It also aspires to build bridges of understanding and cooperation between American and Syrian people and institutions. Future Movement is a Lebanese political movement led by Saad Hariri. The movement is the largest member of the March 14 Alliance, which opposes the Syrian regime’s meddling in Lebanon.
