30 a.m. to 1 p.m.– Elaborate apparel, distinctive dishes and diverse cultural backgrounds come together in this festive annual event. October 18, 2012

Right here in the 1960 area of Houston, young students can let their minds venture without boundaries, as they begin to gain valuable global insight. At the Festival of Nations, held annually at Northwood Montessori AMI, classmates join together in a celebration of cultural diversity. And this year, the whole community is invited to participate. Or, for those who prefer to simply sit back and take in the sights, there’s still plenty of fun to be had.

Each student, dressed in an elaborate outfit that represents his or her ancestral heritage, lines up with teachers to participate in a parade through the campus grounds, with parents and family admiring from the sidelines. As usual, many global cultures will be on display – from authentic Indian saris, to Japanese geisha kimonos, Czech folk costumes, traditional Mexican dress, Russian garb, Middle Eastern apparel, South American attire, outfits representing the many cultures of African nations and more.

“Festival of Nations is a great confidence booster for young children, and it’s an excellent opportunity to immerse both the students and parents into a unique learning experience,” said Carita Goss, Co-Administrator. “And this year, for the first time, we’re inviting area families to join us in appreciating the unique cultural contributions that link us all together.”

Another first for 2012 will be the appearance of an authentic Flamenco dancer, who will encourage the crowd to cut loose and move to the music. During this time there will also be classroom tours available for those interested. Come and see what the Montessori approach is all about!

Last, but not least, what festival would be complete without a feast? The event culminates in a global “melting pot” of tasteful treats from all of the nations represented by Northwood Montessori’s diverse enrollment. At the end of the day, students, teachers and parents have truly gotten a taste of the international influence that makes our world go ’round.

In addition to the Festival of Nations, Northwood holds many other engaging events, including an annual fundraiser, which includes both live and silent auctions. Proceeds earned go toward the school’s scholarship fund, as well as various enrichment programs – such as starting a nature study area, developing a multicultural library with artifacts and books from around the world, and enhancing the outdoor experience by adding walking trails and a garden.

Located in the 1960 area of Houston, Northwood Montessori is one of only three schools in the city that are accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). The association, founded by Dr. Maria Montessori, was established to maintain the integrity and promote the development of her pioneering educational principles.

Northwood Montessori AMI , located at 14901 Welcome Lane in Houston, was established in 1975 as a nonprofit, nondenominational school for children ages 2½ to 6½. In this unique learning environment, each child progresses through an individualized program consisting of language development, reading, math skills, botany, geography, art, music and movement.
