Unique Conservation Studio Opens on the Central Coast

Timbs provides specialized services for antiques and art, metal, ceramic, glass, wood and leather that are not usually found outside of museums.

“I love preserving the history that these pieces represent,” explains Timbs. “Each restoration is a story that is being brought to life. I feel I am helping a piece of history tell its story to generations to come.”

Providing museum-quality conservation work on antiques and art objects, Timbs uses techniques and materials of the highest quality to prolong the life of heirlooms. One of Timbs’ greatest restorations was an early 18th century French gilded desk passed down within a family for over 100 years. With the help of the materials engineering department at Cal Poly, Timbs was able to determine what kind of metal was in the desk. After determining metal composition and documenting the desk’s structure, each piece of the antique was carefully taken apart restored and reassembled, including the original leather desktop.

Among other pieces Timbs restored are World War II leather boots and an Islamic glass bracelet estimated to be from the 16th century.

Timbs received her first master’s degree in principles of conservation and a second master’s degree in conservation of archaeological and museum objects at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She interned in the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the British Museum and at Instituto Nacional de Cultura Cusco in Peru. Timbs has worked with the collection at the History Center of San Luis Obispo County for more than three years.
