Salvi expressed sympathy today in reaction to news that an Illinois resident has been diagnosed with fungal meningitis that is believed to have been caused by contaminated steroid shots distributed by a now-closed Massachusetts pharmacy.

Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health, said Saturday that a Chicago resident who has “signs of meningitis” was being treated in a hospital, according to the Chicago Tribune. The person received an injection of the possibly tainted medication at a Chicago-area healthcare facility, Arnold said.

This news follows an announcement by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) that a second person in Indiana has died in the national outbreak of fungal meningitis cases.

“At this point, we can only express our sympathies for the families who have lost loved ones and hope for the best for those who are sick as well as for those who are working to control this epidemic,” said Salvi, managing equity partner of the Chicago personal injury firm of Salvi Schostok & Pritchard P.C. “Our firm will continue to monitor the crisis and continue our own investigation of it.”

As of October 15, the CDC reported 212 cases of fungal meningitis and two cases of peripheral joint infection nationwide that have been linked to contaminated steroid injections, including 15 deaths.

A total of 15 states have been impacted...January.

The CDC estimates that as many as 14,000 patients received the tainted steroid. Centers for Pain Management in Chicago and Westchester.

Salvi, whose firm pursues medical malpractice, hospital infection and drug injury cases in Illinois and across the Midwest, cautioned that the impact of the meningitis outbreak is likely to continue to spread.

“Unfortunately,” he added, “the aftermath of the damage this outbreak has done to individuals and families will take quite a while to properly sort out.”
