DMCs Celebrate Industry Milestone at IMEX America

Destination Management" was first used in the early 1970s...Phil subsequently convinced the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau to officially adopt the term to distinguish full service DMCs from a variety of single-service providers and “ground operators,” as they were previously called.

Across the Atlantic in Europe, Tom Risbecker of Risbecker International in Sweden began referring to his company and those like it as "Destination Management Companies" in 1982. Soon after, the phrase was adopted by his fellow euromic members.“ Tom also used the term to differentiate their services from those of ground operators," says Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic events & destination management partnership.

Like Kleenex or Jacuzzi, the term became so popular and in such wide use that it is now the industry defining standard. Today, a Google search of “destination management company” turns up more than 45 million results!
