Turkey to discuss Syria at NATO meeting in Brussels.

Earlier this month, gunfire crossed the border from Syria. Turkey says it came from Syrian forces. Ankara responded sharply, strongly condemning what it called "violation" of its border. At a two-day meeting in Brussels, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz are expected to raise the issue with their NATO counterparts. Under article 5 of the NATO Pact, any attack on a member country is an attack on the entire alliance. Article 5 has only been invoked once leading to the action taken against Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks on the United States. Yet Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Syria that it would take necessary action. But 'Entering Syria' has been under discussion for some time as talks of Turkey installing a possible 'buffer zone' have been dominating conversation. This would require the Turkish military to set up a protected area on Syrian soil. Experts say, it could serve as a stepping-stone to wider military deployment and as a supply route for funneling arms to Syrian rebels. While Turkey would likely wait for an international mandate, either from the United Nations or the Arab League before establishing any sort of buffer zone, Ankara could feel increasing pressure if cross border activity continues. The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey has doubled in less than a month. There are currently more than 24000 being taken care of by the Turkish Government.
