April 10th, 2008 -- US Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. The name of the newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, designated as DDG-112, will honor Lt. Michael P. Murphy. The ship's Christening took place May 7th 2011 on what would have been Michael's 35th birthday...."Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) has officially named New York City as the site for the Commissioning of USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112). The crew is deeply honored to now have the opportunity to bring this ship to life in NYC, while truly honoring our namesake.
