Renowned political analyst Shmuel Rosner's new book, "The Jewish Vote: Obama vs. Romney / A Jewish Voter’s Guide” (Jewish Journal Books, 2012) attempts to answer these questions in a nonpartisan analysis of the critical Jewish vote in the upcoming 2012 presidential election.

In this timely account, Rosner looks at the 2012 presidential race through the lens of one of the most influential and fascinating voting blocs in America: American Jews. Although only 2 percent of the population, American Jews can wield an outsized impact on electoral outcomes in critical swing states, and even more so through their activism and political contributions.

Rosner examines the chances of these traditionally Democratic voters switching to support a Republican, and the influence dramatic developments in Israel and the Middle East will have on the Jewish vote. His findings:

  • Jews will still turn out heavily for President Obama, despite Republican predictions — and wishes — to the contrary.
  • Although Israel and Iran are concerns, the top voting issues for Jews remain the economy and health care.
  • Although most Americans lost confidence in Obama’s handling of the economy, most Jews still approve of his job performance even on this issue.
  • For the past 10 years, Republicans failed to make Israel the issue with which to shift the Jewish vote.
  • For the past 20 years, the GOP was not considered a viable political option by most Jews.
  • As long as the Republican Party continues to emphasize religion and social conservatism, it will not be able to capture a large number of Jewish voters.
  • There is a huge gap between the political beliefs of American Jews and Israeli Jews — reflected in their presidential preferences.

Using on-the-spot reporting, statistics, interviews and expert analysis, Rosner provides fresh, original and nonpartisan insights to help readers navigate a highly contentious election season.

Shmuel Rosner is the senior political editor for the Jewish Journal and writes the influential daily blog Rosner's Domain.
