NHK World News ---- Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Description -- China's Navy has received its first aircraft carrier. A ceremony to mark the event took place on Sunday at the northeastern port of Dalian. The aircraft carrier underwent a series of repairs and test navigation since its purchase from Ukraine 14 years ago. The Chinese Defense Ministry says the ship is for training. The images that an NHK crew took on Sunday show the carrier flying China's national flag and those of the navy. The crew wearing white uniforms was lined up on the bridge and the deck. Chinese media say the carrier will soon leave Dalian and sail to a naval facility for a formal commissioning ceremony. A Japanese military analyst says the commissioning will likely take place sometime around October first, the anniversary of China's national Foundation Day, to boost national prestige. The analyst says the ship is likely to be used for landing and take-off training missions in preparation for the future deployment of a Chinese-built carrier. China's bolstering of its naval capabilities with the deployment of the carrier is seen as an attempt to expand its maritime interests. But this latest naval build-up could increase the concerns of China's neighbors. Sep. 23, 2012 - Updated 21:31 UTC (06:31 JST)
