VICTORIA - A major gas leak shut down a large area of downtown Victoria Monday including roads, marine and air traffic. Work crews replacing a water pipe on the Point Ellice Bridge struck a main gas line late Sunday Night. With gas spewing into the air, and the possibility of an explosion, emergency crews took no chances evacuating the area around the Bay Street bridge. The pressure was so great callers to 9-11 reported fumes more than eight kilometers away. Terasen Gas says they have never experienced a situation like this before. Because the pipe was a main gas line getting the flow under control was challenging. Crews installed a shut-off valve and shut off gas to the area around noon. The Capital Regional District says it will conduct an investigation to determine how to avoid a similar situation from happening again. Terasen is conducting its own investigation and says once it can determine the size of the leak and exactly how long the gas was leaking, only then can they put a price tag on the incident.
