Government's decision to allow the exploration for shale gas in the Karoo to go ahead, was highly criticized by environmentalist as well as farmers in the great Karoo. Hydraulic fracturing for shale gas is seen has highly destructive to the environment, especially in a arid area such as the Karoo. Government has also been accused of not playing open cards to the public. But in a Statement to Parliament the Minister of Mineral Resources Susan Shabangu, reiterated that only normal exploration would take place until a proper regulatory framework had been put in place and until government was satisfied that it could deal adequately with the consequences of hydraulic fracturing.
