Former president joins Maldives protest as clashes break out

Former president joins Maldives protest as clashes break out (ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION) Maldives security forces charged at protesters led by former leader Mohamed Nasheed on Friday (August 31) in a bid to disperse demonstrators attempting to walk down a road leading to the presidential palace. Violent clashes broke out when more than 3000 protesters, joined by Nasheed, marched towards the government building demanding an early election and for the current President Mohamed Waheed to resign. Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters protested for a second day against a Commonwealth-backed commission report, which found there was no coup earlier this year during a power transition, in which the former leader resigned. After his resignation on February 7, Nasheed, in power since 2008, said he was forced to resign at gunpoint by mutinying police and soldiers.
