Tokyo governor wants to 'buy' disputed islands
The islands in the East China Sea known in Chinese as the Diaoyutai and in Japanese at the Senkaku Islands are the source a major territorial dispute between Japan, which controls the islands, and China. During a visit to Washington in mid-April, ultranationalist Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara said that the Tokyo city government should buy the islands from their private Japanese owner to make the Japanese government pay attention to China's provocative actions in the area.
