Climate Change Update ( 11 March 2011 ) China Earthquake 5.8 ( 25 dead )

March 11, 2011 - CHINA - At least 25 people were killed and 250 injured in an earthquake that struck a remote area of south-west China near the border with Burma, state media reported. According to local media reports an earthquake measuring 5.8-magnitude hit Yunnan province, 225 kilometres south-west of Dali, at 12:58pm (local time). The quake hit at a depth of 34 kilometres. The earthquake toppled more than 1000 houses and apartment buildings in China's southwest on Thursday, killing at least 25 people and injuring more than 200, officials and state media said. In both areas people have been buried in the debris. Power has been cut in Yingjiang County and soldiers are heading to the scene to help with rescue attempts. A local hospital has put up 50 tents so they can treat many more injured people. Chinese authorities have warned that Yunnan Province should prepare for aftershocks.
