Is chronic pain a disability?” during the Allsup True Help® Disability Web Expo.
The chat is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27, at 1:45 p.m...CST.
The Allsup True Help® Disability Web Expo will connect people with disabilities and their caregivers with programs, services, organizations, resources and experts that can help them access healthier and more financially secure lives. The event will be Section 508 compliant for accessibility.
“One of the most common things my wife hears is, ‘But you look good!’ ” said chat co-moderator Wayne Connell, IDA founder and president. All quality-of-life realms—physical, intellectual, financial, emotional, cultural and spiritual—are diminished by chronic pain illnesses,” she said. “Loved ones are also negatively affected by the substantial drain on family resources and interpersonal relationships.”
Chambers added that when eligibility is determined for disability programs and services, chronic pain is sometimes defined by policy, rather than individual experiences. Chambers said.
Allsup senior claimant representative Danielle Schultz said chronic pain is a very real issue for many of the individuals Allsup helps to receive Social Security disability benefits. She pointed out that one of the challenges people with chronic pain face is the lack of scientific measures to quantify pain.
“It’s important to recognize that chronic pain impacts everyone in a different way,” said Schultz, who will co-moderate the chat. “Although medical evidence can demonstrate the diagnosis responsible for chronic pain, the pain itself isn’t easily measured. Therefore, when applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, it is crucial that we obtain detailed information about how pain impacts daily activity and functioning and, if possible, obtain treating physician’s opinions on how it impacts the ability to work.”
The Web Expo will feature many other chat topics, including, “Wounded warriors—a discussion on veteran disability resources.” Register for the free, online event by visiting webexpo.allsup.com. Registrants can download the agenda and calendar reminders for the Sept. 27 event.
